Google is launching AI chips into space to see if they survive up there
Google plans to launch an experimental satellite called MVP on October 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, carrying four Tensor Processing Units to test whether AI chips can operate in orbit. This is the first orbital test of Project Suncatcher, exploring solar-powered satellites as space-based data centers for AI workloads. The chips can run only about 15 minutes before needing to cool, and the satellite is expected to operate for one year.
