Oil prices surge after Trump rejects Iran's plan to reopen Strait of Hormuz
Brent crude surged more than 3% on September 28, topping $107 per barrel, after U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days in exchange for sanctions relief and an end to the U.S. naval blockade. The Strait, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies flowed before the war that began in late February, remains largely blocked with commercial shipping drastically reduced from pre-war levels of about 130 transits per day. Iran's proposal, announced at the UN General Assembly, had called for releasing $12 billion in frozen assets and lifting sanctions, but Trump dismissed it as unacceptable.
