The long-range drone war: Ukraine and Russia scramble for supremacy in the skies
A conflict that began with tanks and artillery is now pivoting around a new generation of drones focused on military, industrial, economic, and civilian targets hundreds of miles beyond the frontline. New UN figures show 2,222 killed in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026, more than in all of 2025, as both sides race to develop jet-powered drones and long-range strike capabilities. Russia captured a modest 90 square kilometres of Ukraine in August, compared with 505 sq km a year earlier, while western officials estimate it is losing 6,000 more soldiers a month than it can recruit.
