Iran on Saturday awaited an official US response to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting in the wider Middle East war after the Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump had rejected the deal. Iran raised the diplomatic initiative at the UN General Assembly, saying it had been transmitted to the Americans via Qatari mediators and could reopen the strategic waterway and end hostilities within seven days. The proposal included a ceasefire, release of frozen Iranian assets worth at least $12 billion, lifting of oil sanctions, and an end to the US naval blockade.
