Trump strikes Greenland deal with Denmark after threatening annexation
President Trump announced on Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland granting the U.S. 'permanent control over security, and all other needs' in the semi-autonomous Arctic territory. The deal came after months of Trump threatening to forcibly seize Greenland and just 17 days after a U.S.-based company closed a deal to purchase a Greenland mining company that would produce over a third of the world's rare earth magnet supply outside China. Danish and Greenlandic officials said the agreement would not compromise the territory's sovereignty, and it requires parliamentary approval from both.
